Review: The Secret of Ella and Micha {Jessica Sorensen}

The Secret of Ella and Micha (The Secret, #1)
A rule-breaker with a fiery attitude, Ella always wore her heart on her sleeve. Then she left everything behind to go to college, where she transformed into someone who follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems.

Now it's summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home. But once there, Ella fears that everything she's worked so hard to bury might resurface-especially with Micha living right next door.

Smart, sexy, and confident, Micha can get under Ella's skin like no one else. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. If he tries to tempt the old Ella to return, he will be impossible to resist. But what Ella doesn't realize is that when she left, she took a piece of Micha's heart with her. Now he's determined to win back the girl he lost, no matter what it takes.

This book is a whirlwind. Ella's story is just riveting in so many ways, mostly because of her heart-breaking emotional situation. She's a mess and watching her try to squash her feelings and deny her past was really compelling.

Ella is thoroughly endearing and I never got the sense that she was feeling sorry for herself or moping around. In fact, Ella was hardcore! She tries to hide her feelings from most of the people in her life, so as a reader it was great to know what she was going through and how she truly felt.

As for Micha, after just a few pages I was sold. Yes, he is a gorgeous musician and a boy boy with a penchant for racing. But there's a lot more to his character than that basic, superficial stuff.

The extent to which he cares for Ella is evident throughout. He never tries to hide his feelings and it's clear that she is the most important person in his life, which was wonderful to see. He always put her first and was so understanding and patient with her, which I had to give him credit for because if my best friend ran away for eight months without so much as a goodbye, leaving me to wonder whether she was dead or alive, there would be an exchange of words.

Of course this doesn't mean that Micha lets Ella get away with the things she's done. Though he understands what she's going through and is supportive, he's also one of the only people to call her out on her crap and make her realise that she needs to deal with things, rather than just keep running.

This was a lot more emotional than I anticipated. The character relationships are beautiful and wonderfully complex and I really enjoyed Ella and Micha's story. Their romance was well-developed and when they were together their scenes set fire to the page. I loved watching them both break down each other's boundaries and seeing how their relationship really influenced how they saw the world.
