New Year Goals Make For A Better Birdie

So I figured this year I'd make some resolutions and stick to them. Which, for me, is a pretty monumental deal. Not because I usually make and break my goals, but because I never really make any to begin with.

But I think this year it'd be good to have some resolutions, especially blogging / reading wise. There are so many books I want to read in 2014, so this will be a list of all of my Reading Resolutions for this year, including some awesome challenges I'm going to be participating in!

To discover awesome debuts, so new authors can share in the spotlight! The goal is for 12, but I think I can step it up a notch.

To clear the dust-bunnies out of my TBR list. This'll be a great way of forcing me to focus on some oldies I've been pining for. Aiming for the 31 - 40 Sweet Summer Fling on this one!

To read 100 (fiction) books this year. This actually works out quite nicely because it ties in with my GR Reading Challenge goal, so I'm twice as determined. It'll be really cool to see what books everyone is reading.

I feel like the US kind of have the market on YA fiction, so I really want to try reading some contemporary / YA stuff from my ol' home country. Fellow Brits, let's do this! There's even prize packs involved!

To FINISH as many book series as possible in 2014. I can't wait for this one - there are SO MANY series I've started that I want to finish and so many more I'm yet to check out that I can't wait to stick my nose in. Going for the Gold Badge of 7 - 11 series for this one!

  • Reach my Goodreads Reading Challenge goal - this something I'm really excited to do, since it will be my first full year book blogging and I want to read my little heart out.

  • Write down my favourite quotes in my notebook - I have most of them on my GR page, but I really want to make a quote scrapbook. I know a lot of people do this and I think it's so cool.

  • Read more outside my comfort zone / discover new genres & authors - I discovered so many new authors and books I never would have thought of reading in 2013. It was a great year for me book-wise, so I plan to really branch out in 2014 and smash through my comfort zone.

  • Write notes as I read for future reviews - I find that sometimes I forget things I really want to discuss in my reviews and it's only when I read another blogger's review that I'm like 'OH YEAH, I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THAT TOO! DAMN!' So I'm resolving to make some notes while I read so I can make my reviews more in-depth and won't have to smack myself on the head when I realise I've forgotten something.

Did you guys make any resolutions this year? Are you going to take part in some blogging challenges? Let me know; I'd love to hear what your plans for the New Year are! Let's make 2014 awesome.

  1. I didn't really make any specific resolutions this year besides wanting to continue the blog and read more of what scares me - contemporary and paranormal. Love all your goals, Allie, and I can't wait to see what 2014 has in store for you!

  2. I like your quotes resolution. I'm so bad at pulling out quotes, but then I see other people mention quotes and I get jealous that I don' have any!

    1. Same here! The best I've done is like some on GR, but they don't always have all of the quotes on there :/

  3. I keep review notebooks -- not only do those notes come in handy when writing reviews, I think you'll also find them very useful when a year has passed and you need to read the book that comes next and can't remember where things left off...

Love your quote idea -- I don't write down quotes, and maybe I should!!

Happy New Year and thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics

    1. I never actually thought of that! Yeah, that would be useful, because a lot of the time when I read book 2 / 3 in a series it takes me a while to get my bearings and remember things (specifically when it comes to minor characters).

  4. These are some great goals! I don't think I'm going to do any challenges, but I'm excited to set some blogging goals/resolutions to work on all year, because it'll be my first full year blogging as well. :D Taking notes while reading is a big one, and I'm also going to try to be better about writing reviews and WoW/TTT's EARLY, because it takes so much of the stress out of blogging to have even just one week scheduled in advance!

    1. I really want to try scheduling posts, especially for thing like TTT or even SSS! We'll work together to be more organised :D

  5. I've been wanting to take notes while I read as well. I just tend to forget once I start reading, and sometimes I read at other places that don't make taking notes easy. It would make my reviews better though, so hopefully we can both do this!

  6. These challenges sound great, especially the one about finishing series' off. I was planning on spending February knocking out a fair few so that really appeals to me. Fingers are crossed for you!

  7. I haven't done any resolutions yet (I probably will this week, I'm still thinking about them!) good luck with yours! I keep a notebook for writing down notes as I read, sometimes I'm so engrossed in a book I forget about it though so all I have at the end is 'THIS WAS AWESOME!' *facepalm* gives me an excuse to flick through it again to try to remember the bits I wanted to talk about though ;)

  8. I like the series challenge and the TBR pile challenge. They go nicely hand in hand for me - a lot of the titles collecting dust on my shelf are series instalments that I haven't managed to get around to. I need to make an effort to finally finish up a few of my favourites, before I go looking for new books! Good luck with your challenges and reading goal, Allie. :)

    1. Same here! There are so many books on my TBR that are slowly dying of old age and I'm completely ignoring them. I need to stop fangirling over new releases so much lol

  9. I am the same way with series! I've only got about a million to finish! Good luck with all of your goals! :)

  10. I love the name you chose for this post =) Very fitting. Writing notes while reading is a great resolution. I should have that one too. There are so many times that I wish I had remembered when I was reading. Especially for certain quotes. Best of luck with all of your resolutions!

    1. Haha thanks!

I'm definitely writing more notes now, and also I find doing status updates on GR is helping because once I'm done with the book I can look at all my mini updates on it and see how I reacted to certain things (especially true of the book I'm reading right now!)

  11. I'm going to have to check out some of these challenges. They're exactlly what I need to motivate me (especially to get some of the older books off my shelf read). Thanks for sharing!

And good luck with reading 100 books this year :)

    1. I'm normally the same; I get so lazy :P

These ones more or less fit in with what I already do / want to do reading wise, so I think I'll be quite good this year. Plus I want the cool badges that go with doing well in them haha

  13. Oh I love that last reader resolution! I've never been one for making notes because it's hard for me to stop reading! But I really need to do that because while I read I think of things I'll want to say and then forget once I write my review. Good luck with all those blogging challenges! They look fun!
