Authors I Found Under Rocks in 2014 {Top Ten Tuesday}

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, where we get to reveal our top ten of whatever they chose as the weekly topic! Click here for a list of future topics.

This week's topic is authors I found in 2014. Ones I saw hidden under rocks and pulled  out for the world to see. Though that sounds like I discovered them and am responsible for giving their talent to the rest of the world . . . hmm. That's not true, by the way. Or is it? YOU'LL NEVER KNOW.

Laini Taylor through Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Sarah J Maas through Throne of Glass

Michelle Hodkin through The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
 Susan Ee through Angelfall

Kendall Kulper through The Witch of Salt and Storm
Sarah Fine through Of Metal and Wishes

Amy Zhang through Falling into Place
 E. Lockhart through We Were Liars

Abigail Haas through Dangerous Girls
Krista & Becca Ritchie through Addicted to You

I discovered some of my all-time favourite authors this year, which is just amazing. It's odd to think I only started reading some people on this list in 2014, because it feels like I've been reading their books forever!

What awesome authors did you discover this year?

Allie enjoys pretending that she's responsible for launching the careers of authors, who many of her friends loved before her. She also enjoys brownies, but that's beside the point.

  1. I really need to get to reading Sarah J. Maas - I don't know why I haven't yet. I do have all the Thrones of Glass books. Maybe I'm just waiting for the perfect time so I can binge read and don't have to suffer!

I love the Mara Dyer books and was so glad I found her his year so I could binge read those. Well, I binged one and two, but had to wait for three myself.

  3. KULPER AND EE. YES TO THE TWO OF THEM. I can't believe that I only just picked up Angelfall this year. That's insane. The banter was so on point. I laughed a tad too much.

And Kulper was just beautiful. That writing was insane. I may have shed some tears...

  7. LOL your logic is invalid, but I give you brownie points for coming up with this logic in the first place because it's hilarious. ANYWAYYYYY omg LAINI TAYLOR AND SJM AND MICHELLE HODKIN (and soon I'll be yelling omg this is brilliant and she is brilliant about Susan Ee, you just wait! Same for Sarah Fine tbh) AND YESSS KRISTA AND BECCA OBVIOUSLY OKAY. Alsoooo, I need to rad Dangerous Girls after Nick kindly gifted me a copy :) It's tempting me with all its mysteries and shocking outcomes! I discovered Jenny Han('s solo work) and Emery Lord ;) Winning with these authors.

    1. To be honest, the last Mara Dyer book was a bit of a letdown for me, but the first two were just wonderful, so I can't wait to see what Michelle does next!

Did you read the second Throne of Glass book? I wasn't amazed by the first one, but once I read Crown of Midnight I was beyond hooked.

  13. ABIGAIL HASS! *flails* Her books are just absolutely fantastic and mind-blowing.

And I definitely agree about E. Lockhart too! Her We Were Liars was absolutely excellent, and I'm really interested in reading some of her other books and seeing how they compare.

    Fabulous choices Allie! :D

  16. Oh yes, Krista and Becca Ritchie!!! Michelle Hodkin is on mine too, I really need to finish the Mara Dyer series (gotta get book two). Both Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Throne of Glass are on my Jan tbr though! I've heard so many great things about them both. Great list, Allie! You crack me up with your logic btw :P

    1. How could I ever forget Krista and Becca? IMPOSSIBLE.

Book two in Mara is so good! Book three is a little . . . eh. Still, though, awesome series!

HOW HAVE YOU NOT READ SMOKE AND BONE, OR THRONE OF GLASS? This is pure madness and I don't understand. Read them or I'll . . . I'll . . . I'll put a curse on all of your future cake so it's eaten before you have a chance to taste it

  17. Very nice list! I am determined next year to read Laini Taylor and Sarah J. Maas. It is happening! Oh, and Sarah Fine, though I may get to Of Metal and Wishes before the year ends, we'll see! Great list, I am glad you discovered these amazing authors!

    1. Make it happen, Shannon! It's imperative you have those two authors in your life ASAP

  18. Ooh, Laini Taylor is an author I read for the first time this year despite DoSaB being on my TBR since its publication. I'm so glad I got around to reading it! I enjoyed it, but was slightly disappointed. Sarah J. Maas and E. Lockhart are also authors I read for the first time this year, but was disappointed both times round, unfortunately. I'm definitely giving Crown of Midnight a go, and I want to try something else of Lockhart's as well. Michelle Hodkin was another great discovery for me this year, and I loved Amy Zhang as well. I've started Angelfall, but haven't finished it yet - I never seem to be in the right mood for it unfortunately. Kendall Kulper, Sarah Fine and Abigail Haas are all authors whom I need to get to ASAP...especially Abigail Haas as I own a copy of Dangerous Girls and have heard nothing but positive things about that one.

    1. Have you read Days of Blood and Starlight, or Dreams of Gods? They're both even better than the first. They're long though, so be warned! But, still, if you're wondering if the series gets better, I really think it does.

Do 100% read Crown of Midnight! Throne of Glass was not my favourite, but Crown of Midnight was just wonderful. It got me completely enamoured with the series. And then Heir of Fire OH DEAR GOD. I can't explain the feels. Seriously.

  20. Incredible list Allie, the only one I haven't heard of is Kendall Kulper. The one that stands out for me is E Lockhart. We Were Liars was one of the books if 2014 for me, so brilliant and surprising. It's amazing to see readers so torn on it too. Either it was well loved or labelled as boring. Sarah Maas, tried Throne of Glass once, but wasn't in the mood for it really, so over summer will be trying the series again. I dare say that I'll probably be lynched if I don't enjoy it.

Brilliant list poppet <3 Thanks for sharing

    1. We Were Liars was such a fantastic book. It reminded me quite a lot of Falling Into Place, in terms of tone and such. Probably why I loved FiP so much too!

Definitely try ToG! Even if you don't like the first book that much, carry on because the next books are some of the most amazing things I've read in my entire life

  21. I can relate to you regarding most of these authors. Sarah J. Maas, Michelle Hodkin, Susan Ee and Abigal Haas would probably be on the top of my list of favorite authors for the year 2014. I have high hopes for Of Metals and Wishes. GREAT list! x

  22. Susan Ee made my list too! Love the Angelfall series so much! I think the ending might kill me. D: I really need to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone and the Addicted series. I have Amour Amour on my Kindle and plan on reading it SOON. Love Michelle Hodkin, and I read lots of Sarah Fine this year. <3

  25. I found many of my beloved favorite authors this year, too. Honestly, 2014 has been such a good year for me book-wise. So many good books written, so many good debut authors, and I'm excited for 2015 because it seems like the upcoming titles are promising as well. I'm just glad I was able to find out the awesomeness of Laini Taylor... I've held out reading her series for so long even though everyone was absolutely raving about them. Now I understand the hype!

  26. I couldn't put Laini Taylor on my top new author list because I read Daughter of Smoke & Bone last year... but two of her books made my top ten books list this year. I really enjoyed that whole series.

I haven't read Throne of Glass yet, though I do have a copy sitting in my TBR pile. Maybe in 2015...

  27. YES to Angelfall! I cannot wait for the last book! I need to finish the Mara Dyer series, and probably reread the first book! I have heard awesome things about Dangerous Girls, I got a copy so I need to pick it up soon
